Lee-Tze & Shubhit Business Cards

Haven’t got any new work right now, but the D&AD New Blood is taking place at the moment so we decided to create some business cards just in case we meet anyone. This is pretty much our first project together. They’re incredibly nerdy cards with advertising in-joke cartoons, so enjoy!

First time meeting in real life! :D

My degree show space

My degree show space

Degree showreel

In other news, I just got my results today and I have officially passed my degree with 2:1, so good morning Future! :D My plan now is to work on a brand new portfolio for a future in advertising, hopefully as an art director with my new copywriter, Shuhbit Saxena.

I’d like to thank the D&AD and Glug lectures, the people at Sony Music and Bond & Coyne, and everyone else in advertising who have helped me along the way. I hope my new portfolio will be bigger than better than ever before. We will be setting up new promotional work very soon as well, so watch this space.

Ciao!

Final Major Project: Virgin Galactic

After 3 months, I can safely say I am probably married to Illustrator and After Effects, with a bit of Photoshop and Premiere Pro on the side! ;) Anyway, I’ve finally finished my Virgin Galactic campaign. Plus big thanks to Peter Marchant for the soundtracks, you did a wonderful job. :)

Travel the Universe: A short film

Inflight entertainment sky map presentation – A History of Flight: An Interactive Map (conceptual video presentation)

Ambient media (conceptual illustration)

The Business Challenge
Virgin Galactic is a company that will be flying tourists in to space in the near future. So far, only 380 people have pledged deposits towards their first space flights, a considerably low number for what will be one of the most prominent space airline carriers in the world.

Insight
When researching the insight in to the brand, I discovered that the target audience are successful, middle-aged business entrepreneurs who fondly remember the first moon landing in 1969 and an era saturated with science fiction films and books.

The Brand Purpose
This campaign intends to create a buzz for the brand in time for its commercial launch.

The Creative Solution
Travel the Universe: A short film
is intended to convey childhood nostalgia. The story uses Richard Branson as the main character as he is the face of the Virgin brand, and more significantly, could easily be a role-model to the target audience as a successful professional, pioneer and adventurer. He goes through some of the most important events in flight history, such as the first aeroplane flight by the Wright Brothers in 1903 to the longest lighter-than-air journey with the Virgin Pacific Flyer in 1991.

For this campaign, I wanted to use an interactive medium as another advertising platform to perpetuate the idea that Virgin Galactic is an innovative, technology-based brand. A History of Flight: An Interactive Map gets Virgin customers to engage with the new brand in an educational way while getting them to be excited at the prospect of flight and space. It was originally a fairly complex concept to imagine, but it has been simplified to a basic and customised version of the inflight entertainment system’s sky map. It is designed like a video game so it is easy for audiences to use.

The film and the map will be featured on Virgin’s award-winning inflight entertainment systems on Virgin Airlines. This is the world’s first integrated advertising campaign to use this platform.

As Virgin Galactic’s services is based primarily outdoors, I thought that an ambient media piece might also suit the brand experience. My intention was to create something large and eye-catching that would capture the attention of free extra advertising through the media press, such as newspapers and online blogs.

My ambient media piece utilises Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShip 2, which will fly over the City of London with a banner stating, ‘Fly Higher’ to reach the aspirational business-minded target audience. The phrase, ‘Fly Higher’ is an inspiring piece of copy that office workers can see from their windows on a dull working day in the City of London.

The campaign will also be featured on the company’s official website, YouTube and social networking websites. It is important today to ensure that all potential audiences can reach the campaign, even if they are technically outside the target audience for the time being.

Enjoy!

Sony Music UK Creative Department

Just had a creative internship with Sony Music with the most amazing people. Once our projects get made, I’ll talk more about it. I’m really really going to miss it. Here’s a nice memento. :]

D&AD 2011: McDonalds & Westfield

D&AD results came out today. Aaaaaand………….unfortunately, I didn’t win. On the bright side, I can now publish my work without the possibility of Ronald McDonald coming to attack me in my sleep, or other dire consequences. ;) Anyway for McDonalds, I’d love to thank Shaggy for copywriting, Peter for the music (on both Westfield and McDonalds), Katya, Michalis, Koyoka, Elsa and Jenny for their dancing and acting skills. For Westfield, sorry I don’t know all your names, but thank you to the general public at WSA for letting me take their photographs. :)

Steaned Green Tea Cake

My Mum has her birthday on the same day as Mother’s Day this year. Decided to quickly put together this steamed green tea cake. Here’s the original recipe. Unfortunately, didn’t manage to get hold of any green tea powder, so had to use green tea bag filling. Not quite the same! Didn’t have much of a green tea taste. The cake tastes better than it looks though. Not too sweet, which is just perfect for my family. Steamed cake is interesting as it is quite a bit different in texture from baked cake. It’s more moist and a bit more stodgy and eggy.

Virgin Galactic – First Animation Tests

Okay, well I’d better stop putting out random illustrations and actually explain my concept.

I’m creating an animated advert that tells the story of Richard Branson as a child travelling through famous moments in flight and space history.  It’s going to (hopefully!) be an endearing story that brings a sense of childhood nostalgia and ambition for flight and space, with the Virgin Galactic brand.

The story begins with Richard Branson going to the Shamley Green funfair with his parents in the 1950s (Shamley Green is where he grew up). Suddenly, he spots a large booth labelled ‘time machine’ and enters it. He presses a button, thinking nothing will happen, but out of nowhere, he is whisked away on a whirlwind trip in to flight and space history/future.

Moments I hope to cover are:

  • 1903: First powered manned flight by the Wright brothers
  • 1969: USA moon landing with Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong
  • 1968: 2001: A Space Odyssey directed by Stanley Kubrick
  • 1991: Virgin Pacific Flyer with Per Lindstrand
  • 2010: Virgin White Knight 2 debut with Burt Rutan

I’ve finished a storyboard, but it is over 28 pages long and needs a lot of explaining, so I don’t think I will upload it here! I hope the concept doesn’t sound too dull and dry at the moment, but I can promise there will hopefully be plenty of quirky and emotive moments in the storyline.

Thank goodness I grew up with Animé and Manga, it taught me a bit about drawing and story telling! Would have struggled loads otherwise. Just hope I can finish animating it.

The animation would hypothetically be shown on the inflight entertainment systems on Virgin Atlantic First and Business classes (as well as Youtube etc.). It would be followed by a customised version of the IFE map, and customers can customise their own map with their favourite moments in space history, fill in their email address and VA will pick them up at the end of the flight and email their maps to them.

I also want to create an ambient media piece using Virgin Balloons. More on that later!

Anyway, here’s my first parts of the animation. Welcome to Shamley Green FUNFAIR!!!

Richard Branson (as a child) lands on the moon and hitches a ride on Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s moon buggy.

Thanks for watching!

Virgin Galactic Scamps

Here are some illustrations to show a potential advertising commercial for Virgin Galactic. I’ll talk about the concept when I have more visuals in the future.

1903: The Wright brothers fly the first working aeroplane. Richard Branson, as a child, dreams of going back to that time in history

2001: A Space Odyssey

1969: Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin takes Richard Branson on a tour of the moon

1998: Virgin Pacific Flyer (inside the capsule)

2010: One of the first outings of the White Knight 2, with (grown-up) Richard Branson in the pilot’s cockpit of Virgin Galactic’s White Knight II

A map design concept I’m working on in conjunction with inflight entertainment systems. So far, I only have two events on planet Earth only to pinpoint!

Ciao for now!
